# 12 Best Engagement Photo Locations in Orange County
One of the first questions I get from newly engaged couples is "Where should we do our engagement session?" And honestly, it's one of my favorite conversations to have. After shooting engagement sessions all over Orange County for years, I've built up a mental catalog of spots that consistently deliver great photos, plus a few hidden gems most people don't know about.

1. Heisler Park, Laguna Beach
This is my number one. The combination of manicured gardens, rocky coastline, and those iconic Laguna Beach coves makes it ridiculously versatile. We can get lush greenery, dramatic ocean cliffs, and sandy beach all within a five-minute walk.
Best time: 1-2 hours before sunset. The light wraps around the bluffs and turns everything golden. Parking: Street parking along Cliff Drive fills up fast on weekends. Arrive early or use the lot on Forest Avenue.2. Victoria Beach & the Pirate Tower
If you want something truly unique, Victoria Beach has that iconic tower that looks straight out of a fairy tale. The beach itself is less crowded than Main Beach, and the rock formations give us great texture and depth.
Best time: Low tide is essential here, so check the tide charts before we book. Late afternoon light is ideal. Parking: Very limited. Street parking only on residential streets above the beach. Plan to walk a few minutes.
3. Newport Beach Back Bay
For a completely different vibe, the Back Bay trails give us open fields, tall grasses, and soft, diffused light. It feels like you're in wine country, not five minutes from Fashion Island. I love this spot for couples who want something earthy and natural.
Best time: The hour before sunset, when the grasses catch the light and glow. Parking: Easy. Use the lot at the Back Bay Science Center off Shellmaker Road.4. Balboa Island
Colorful cottages, the little ferry, waterfront boardwalks. Balboa Island has a charm you can't manufacture. It's perfect for couples who want a fun, playful session with plenty of variety. We can grab ice cream at the candy shop and make it part of the shoot.
Best time: Late afternoon. The island faces west, so sunset light is spectacular from the boardwalk. Parking: Free street parking on side streets, but weekend afternoons get busy. Weekday sessions are easier here.
5. Crystal Cove State Park
The historic cottages at Crystal Cove are rustic, beachy, and photograph beautifully. The beach itself is wide and usually less crowded than Laguna, and the bluffs above give us a killer high-angle perspective.
Best time: 2 hours before sunset gives us time for both the cottage area and the beach. Parking: $15 day-use fee. The lot fills by mid-morning on weekends, so afternoon sessions usually mean parking on the PCH shoulder and walking in.6. San Juan Capistrano Mission
For couples who love history and architecture, the Mission is gorgeous. Arches, stone walls, garden courtyards, that famous fountain. It's one of the most photogenic buildings in all of Orange County. The warm tones of the stone look incredible in late afternoon light.
Best time: Golden hour. The arches create beautiful framed compositions as the sun drops. Parking: Public lots on Ortega Highway, easy access.
7. Top of the World, Laguna Beach
A short drive up into the hills and you get a panoramic ocean view that stretches from Dana Point to Catalina Island. It's dramatic, it's wide-open, and on a clear day, the backdrop is jaw-dropping. This spot pairs well with a Heisler Park session. We start up here and finish at the beach.
Best time: 45 minutes before sunset for the best sky color. Parking: Small lot at the trailhead off Alta Laguna Boulevard. Usually available on weekday evenings.8. Old Town Orange
If you prefer an urban, vintage feel, the Orange Circle delivers. Antique shops, brick buildings, tree-lined streets, and a classic small-town charm that feels worlds away from the beach. Great for couples who want outfit changes, and the variety of backdrops here is excellent.
Best time: Late afternoon for warm light down the main streets. Also great in the morning for a quieter feel. Parking: Free street parking and public lots around the circle.
9. Dana Point Harbor
The harbor has sailboats, a lighthouse, rocky jetties, and wide ocean views. It's less busy than most Laguna spots and the walking paths make for easy, relaxed sessions. I especially love the area near the Ocean Institute for its rugged coastal feel.
Best time: Sunset. The harbor faces south-southwest, so we get beautiful side light. Parking: Plenty of free parking throughout the harbor.10. Santiago Oaks Regional Park
Inland Orange County doesn't get enough love for engagement photos, and this park is proof. Oak groves, creek beds, rolling hills, and the most gorgeous dappled light you've ever seen. Perfect for fall and winter sessions when the grass is green.
Best time: 2 hours before sunset. The oak canopy filters the light beautifully. Parking: $3-5 day-use fee. Small lot but rarely full on weekday evenings.11. Treasure Island Park, Laguna Beach
Located right next to the Montage resort, this park has a manicured lawn with a straight-out-of-a-postcard ocean bluff. It's a bit more polished than Heisler Park and works perfectly for couples who want something elegant and clean.
Best time: Late afternoon to sunset. Parking: Use the Montage public lot (free for 30-minute increments) or street parking on Wesley Drive.12. Huntington Beach Pier
For that classic Southern California energy (surfers, wide sandy beach, a long pier stretching into the Pacific) Huntington Beach can't be beat. It's especially fun for couples who met at the beach or have that laid-back coastal lifestyle. Just be prepared for other people in the background. This is a popular spot.
Best time: Sunset, always. The pier silhouette against a pink sky is iconic. Parking: Metered lots along PCH. Budget a few dollars.
A Few General Tips
What to wear: Soft, neutral colors photograph best at beach locations. Bolder colors work well in urban spots like Old Town Orange.
